Brown Pelican by Barbara Banthien.
Pelicans are among my favorite birds to paint. There is something prehistoric in their crusty beaks and beady eyes, but they have a beauty and solemnity that is unique. This particular pelican I have painted many times. Here he is in his non-breeding plumage. I have painted this particular Brown pelican many times. He resided at WildCare, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Marin County. There, I was able to study him up close, and get the clear reference that I need. I was sad to learn he passed away this past winter.
