This Art Glass plate is created using a specific kiln where temperature can be controlled throughout the firing process.   Annealing each piece of art glass is critical to assure its durability.  It is vital that functional art glass pieces are slowly annealed to relieve internal stress accumulated during formation; fusing multiple sorts, thicknesses, and layers of glass.  This annealing process is intended to prevent any incidents of fracture or cracks due to varying temperatures of home use.   During firing, the Art Glass plates and platters reach temperatures near 1500°.  Annealing is the process of slowly cooling the art glass after its peak temperature to prevent thermal shock.  The construction of each piece requires predetermined varying heat, length of time (sometimes multiple stages), and specific annealing temperatures called schedules.  Each firing, of the multiple firings required for each piece, takes approximately 12 hours.  Three firings per piece is common, yet more firings may be used toward a finished piece.
