Brilliant Spray, by Erin Dertner, captures that fleeting moment of the peak of the spray crashing into the rocks. Original oil painting, framed, image size 24" x 36", framed size 32 1/2" x 44 1/2".

About Brilliant Spray, Erin says:

"It’s not often that I hone in on a small scene but paint it in a big way. I honestly wish I could do this more often because I think it’s very soothing to the viewer even if it presents some difficulties to the painter. The space divisions and variety of shapes is very important when composing something simple and it truly is a challenge. I was especially drawn to the way the sky was reflected on the high spots within the blue water and the way it set off the foam and spray against the dark rocks. The colorful rivulets within the cracks echo the ocean and serve to lead your eye around the image. The palette knife works well to create texture which is paramount in a scene like this, between the spray and craggy rocks and also the calm areas. You get the feeling that you’re about to get wet and I love that quality about this painting."

Long-time Mendocino plein air artist proficient in oils with a palette knife, oils with brushes, watercolors, and acrylics.

Painting, studying and teaching the subject of light is Erin’s driving force. The cool shadows of the early morning and those that fall long and warm in the evening enliven her creative soul as nothing else. Subject matter is secondary to the sunlight itself, though her locations speak volumes about God’s wondrous world of color, drama and mystery.
